  1. WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--February 4, 1992--Novell, Inc., developer of NetWare
  2. systems software, today announced a 200 user version of NetWare for
  3. Macintosh that leads a list of enhanced solutions for the Apple Macintosh
  4. personal computer user. NetWare for Macintosh now provides support for up
  5. to 200 Macintosh users on a NetWare network, and supports SNMP, the
  6. industry standard for network management. Through a new upgrade program,
  7. users can increase the number of Macintosh computers supported on their
  8. networks at special customer prices. Novell will distribute, free of
  9. charge, the software component that activates the SNMP network management
  10. feature in earlier versions of NetWare for Macintosh.

  12. "We're making it easier for our customers to grow their networks," said
  13. Steve Nelson, Novell director of product marketing. "By increasing the
  14. number of Macintosh users that NetWare supports, and by providing industry
  15. standard management capabilities, this series of enhancements reflects
  16. Novell's commitment to the Macintosh user."

  18. Support for 200-Users
  19.  
  20. Novell has enhanced NetWare for Macintosh so that it is now available in
  21. three configurations: 20 users, 100 users, and 200 users. With the
  22. addition of the 200-user version of NetWare for Macintosh, Novell provides
  23. a greater user stratification, offering both entry-level and two high-end
  24. solutions for the NetWare user.

  26. Support for SNMP
  27.  
  28. The AppleTalk router included with the 20-user version of NetWare for
  29. Macintosh supports the AppleTalk MIB I specification for SNMP. Developers
  30. who have SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) consoles that support
  31. these specifications now can view AppleTalk data within the router. This
  32. control of their computer network gives administrators the ability to
  33. obtain information on the status of an AppleTalk network.

  35. Beginning in March 1992, Novell will distribute, free of charge, an
  36. enhanced AppleTalk protocol stack that enables SNMP consoles to monitor
  37. AppleTalk routing within NetWare for Macintosh. This software component,
  38. designed for the 20- and 100-user versions of the product, will be
  39. available through various on-line forums.

  41. Upgrade Program

  43. Novell will begin shipping the 200-user version of NetWare for Macintosh in
  44. March 1992. In the United States and Canada, the suggested retail price of
  45. the 200-user version is U.S. $2,995.00. With the start of a new upgrade
  46. program, however, NetWare for Macintosh v3.x customers can upgrade their
  47. level of Macintosh support at special customer rates.

  49. Users of 20-user NetWare for Macintosh may upgrade to the 100-user version
  50. for U.S. $1,770, and to the 200-user version for U.S.$2,770. NetWare for
  51. Macintosh 100-user customers can upgrade to 200-user support for U.S.
  52. $2,496.

  57. Support for DAL
  58.  
  59. In a related announcement, Novell will unveil support for Apple Computer's
  60. Data Access Language (DAL). DAL is an SQL-based data manipulation language
  61. that enables Macintosh users to access data that is stored on a mainframe
  62. or mini computer, or on the network server, from within Macintosh
  63. applications. When used in conjunction with NetWare SQL, NetWare for
  64. Macintosh will provide support for DAL.

  66. "As the Macintosh continues its growth in all segments of the market,
  67. Novell is responding to the needs of Apple's customers by providing the
  68. products and services that integrate the Macintosh into diverse corporate
  69. environments," said Keith Fox, vice president of business markets for
  70. Apple Computer.

  72. With DAL for NetWare SQL, many off-the-shelf query and spreadsheet
  73. applications for the Macintosh, such as Data Prism, Microsoft Excel and
  74. Lotus 1-2-3, can immediately access NetWare SQL and Btrieve data.

  76. Novell will support DAL connections to the Macintosh in the next release of
  77. NetWare SQL.

  79. Extending Macintosh Networking
  80.  
  81. Two recently announced products from Novell extend the boundaries of
  82. Macintosh networking. NetWare Runtime v3.11 is an OEM version of NetWare
  83. v3.11 that gives developers access to the AppleTalk protocol stack and
  84. router, enabling developers to write cross-platform applications.

  86. The NetWare Multi-Protocol Router v1.0 provides customers with a low-cost,
  87. standalone router solution that includes the AppleTalk router. The
  88. Multi-Protocol Router provides high performance routing of AppleTalk
  89. packets across a Novell network.

  91. Both of these Novell products enable customers to integrate the Macintosh
  92. into their evolving networks, while preserving the existing hardware and
  93. software investment.
